The best way to predict the future is to create it.
I’m Sang-Rae (Ray) Lee, a commodity trader based in Seoul, responsible for the Korean market. I have over 25 years of experience in the coal industry.
My role involves managing coal trading activities in Korea, including negotiating long-term contracts, participating in spot tenders, and developing business opportunities with power utilities, independent power producers, and cement manufacturers.
I also work closely with our sourcing and operations teams to secure competitive coal supplies from various origins and ensure smooth contract execution. Over the years, I’ve learned that building strong relationships, understanding customers’ needs, and adapting to changing market conditions are essential to success in this business.
What inspired you to join Welhunt, and what do you enjoy most about working here?
I joined Welhunt in 2021, attracted by the company’s growing presence in the international coal market and its commitment to expanding its business in Korea, one of Asia’s key coal markets.
Despite its long history, Welhunt impressed me as a dynamic and flexible organization, capable of making quick decisions and adapting to changing market conditions.
What I enjoy most is the company’s ability to respond quickly to market developments while maintaining a flexible approach to different business opportunities. In commodity trading, where timing and adaptability are often critical, I believe these are among Welhunt’s greatest strengths.
What’s your favorite part about the company culture at Welhunt?
What I value most about Welhunt’s culture is the strong sense of teamwork and mutual respect among colleagues.
Although we work across different locations and communicate mainly online, the company makes an effort to bring people together through regular face-to-face meetings. These opportunities help strengthen personal connections and build trust within the team.
I also appreciate that Welhunt values not only business results but also the relationships and teamwork behind those achievements. This creates a supportive environment where colleagues work together toward common goals.
How has working at Welhunt helped you grow professionally? What‘s the most valuable lesson you’ve learned during your time here?
Working at Welhunt has reinforced my understanding of the importance of collaboration and specialization.
With clearly defined responsibilities, each team member can focus on their area of expertise while contributing to the overall success of the business.
One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned is that even a single coal shipment requires close coordination among trading, sourcing, operations, shipping, and finance teams.
A successful trade is not just about securing a competitive deal. It also depends on reliable execution, effective risk management, and fulfilling our commitments to customers.
This experience has deepened my appreciation for teamwork and the contributions of my colleagues.
What has been your proudest moment at Welhunt so far?
My proudest moment at Welhunt was securing our first long-term coal supply contract in the Korean market.
At the time, market conditions were highly volatile, and establishing a new long-term business relationship required considerable effort, careful planning, and mutual trust.
Rather than focusing solely on short-term opportunities, we took a long-term approach and successfully fulfilled our contractual commitments.
This achievement not only strengthened our presence in the Korean market but also laid the foundation for building long-term relationships with other customers.
It was an important milestone for our business in Korea, and I remain grateful to my colleagues for their trust, dedication, and continued support.
What advice would you give to someone just starting out in your field or at Welhunt?
For anyone starting a career in commodity trading, I would recommend gaining hands-on experience in operations before moving into a trading role.
Understanding how a contract is executed, from shipment arrangements to final delivery, provides a strong foundation for making sound commercial decisions.
Even routine tasks can offer valuable lessons. Approaching every responsibility with curiosity, dedication, and a willingness to learn will help prepare you for greater opportunities.
I would also encourage new colleagues not to hesitate to ask questions. At Welhunt, there are many experienced people willing to share their knowledge and offer support.
In my experience, staying curious, taking initiative, and continuously learning are essential to building a successful career in this industry.
