Verra Opens Consultation On Major Cookstove Methodology Overhaul

Verra has opened a public consultation on a major revision to VM0050, its methodology for energy-efficiency and fuel-switch measures in cooking devices. The proposed version 2.0 aims to improve the accuracy, transparency and consistency of emission-reduction quantification for projects deploying improved cookstoves in households, communities and small businesses. Key changes include introducing the MoFuSS–DS tool to determine the fraction of non-renewable biomass, removing CDM TOOL30 as an option, accounting for the Hawthorne effect during emission testing, expanding the methodology to cover heat-retention devices, and standardizing the use of Stove Usage Monitors and Kitchen Performance Tests under the CLEAR framework. The revision was developed by Verra with technical input from Wonderbag SA, Promethium Carbon and Atmosphere Alternative. After finalization, Verra plans to submit version 2.0 to the ICVCM for review. Public comments are open through August 10, 2026, while proposals to independently review the draft were due by July 31.
