U.S. Bank Secures Initial Carbon Removal Offtake Through Carba’s Minnesota Biochar Operations

U.S. Bank entered the carbon dioxide removal market by purchasing credits from biochar developer Carba, its first direct investment in durable removal. The transaction centres on Carba’s deployment at a Minnesota landfill, where a proprietary molten salt pyrolysis reactor converts utility line tree trimmings into biochar for subterranean storage, delivering 1,000-year permanence below $100 per tonne. Operating on-site eliminates heavy feedstock transport costs, addressing the capital and logistics barriers to scaling removal. The deal expands Carba’s client roster, which already includes a five-year Microsoft contract alongside $6 million in funding.
