Taiwan’s China Airlines cuts emissions with sustainable fuel
China Airlines used a 40% blend of sustainable aviation fuel on a long-haul flight to Amsterdam for the first time, cutting an estimated 93.2 tonnes of carbon dioxide. The Taoyuan-Amsterdam flight marked the carrier’s fifth participation in SkyTeam’s Aviation Challenge and its first 40% SAF blend on a long-haul route, using about 36.3 tonnes of SAF. The flight also featured meal trays and cutlery 30% lighter, lower-carbon meals and soy-based ink. While SAF remains 2.5 to 3 times more expensive than conventional jet fuel, China Airlines has completed eight SAF-powered flights since 2022.
