South Africa Farmers Receive First Carbon Credit Payouts

The TASC-led GRASS Group Project has distributed its first carbon-credit revenues, paying R2.7 million to 15 farming communities in South Africa. The payments followed the issuance of 266,254 verified carbon units for the first monitoring period. Developed with Meat Naturally Africa, the project restores degraded rangelands through regenerative grazing, improved livestock management and sustainable land stewardship. It currently covers more than 95,000 hectares and involves around 180 communities and nearly 10,000 livestock farmers. The credits are reportedly the first to combine Verra’s VM0042 methodology with CCB certification. Revenues are distributed through community grazing associations, with communities expected to receive over 50% of net revenues during the first decade and up to 80% by year 20.
