Improved Cookstove Mitigation Activity Authorised by Switzerland and Zambia

Switzerland and Zambia have authorized the BioLite Improved Cookstoves activity under Article 6.2 of the Paris Agreement, marking their first authorized mitigation activity under the bilateral climate agreement. The activity will distribute 163,500 fuel-efficient Dura Stoves through local partners, reducing household fuel use and emissions by approximately 65% compared with traditional cooking methods. BioLite Carbon SPV 2 will own the activity, while the KliK Foundation will purchase the resulting ITMOs to provide essential carbon finance. The revenue will subsidize stove costs and support manufacturing, distribution and monitoring. Beyond reducing emissions and deforestation, the activity is expected to improve indoor air quality, reduce fuel-collection time, create local employment and support Zambia’s target of expanding clean cooking access to 40% of its population by 2030.
