Google Opens 2026 Climate R&D Awards for Carbon Removal

Google has opened applications for its 2026 Carbon Removal and Superpollutant Elimination R&D Awards, supporting research that improves climate-impact certainty and scales mitigation technologies. Eligible applicants include universities, research institutions, nonprofits, social enterprises and qualifying businesses. Funding covers laboratory studies, field trials, prototypes, modelling and data analysis across ocean alkalinity enhancement, BECCS capture systems, biochar feedstocks, mangrove resilience, nature-based removal, low-concentration CO2 capture and perennial crops. Several awards also target methane oxidation, atmospheric methane removal, tidal wetlands and MRV for open-system landfill interventions. Individual funding opportunities generally range from $350,000 to $500,000, while up to two perennial-crop projects may share $800,000. An open call offers up to $450,000 for proposals outside the specified priorities. Google seeks technologies with gigatonne-scale carbon removal or megatonne-scale superpollutant abatement potential.
