Google, McKinsey, Tencent invest in Indonesia carbon removal

Thryve.Earth secured its first corporate carbon removal offtake commitments through separate 10-year agreements involving Google and McKinsey, through the Symbiosis Coalition, and Tencent. Google and McKinsey will jointly purchase more than 335,000 tonnes of removals, while Tencent committed to 300,000 tonnes in its first carbon removal offtake outside China. The removals will come from Thryve’s project to restore 6,000 hectares of degraded land in Sulawesi, Indonesia. The project will use a multilayer agroforestry system combining sugar palms and timber trees with fruit, coffee and annual crops. The model aims to sequester carbon, replenish soils, reduce fire risks and increase biodiversity while diversifying local farmers’ income. Thryve said the long-term commitments provide the volume and price certainty needed to raise financing and expand the project.
