Backed by Japan’s JCM, Indonesia Breaks Ground on Landmark Waste-to-Energy Project

Indonesia has begun constructing the US$400 million Legok Nangka waste-to-energy facility in West Java, its first such project developed through a public-private partnership. Supported by Japanese institutions and reportedly US$46 million in JCM-related financing, the plant will process approximately 1,853–2,131 tonnes of municipal waste daily from six West Java municipalities and regencies. Once operational, it is expected to generate 40.79 MW of electricity and reduce emissions by approximately 311,874 tCO₂e annually. Construction is scheduled to last 41 months, with commercial operations targeted for 2029. PT Jabar Environmental Solutions is developing the project through a consortium involving Sumitomo Corporation, Hitachi Zosen Corporation and PT Energia Prima Nusantara. However, the estimated emission reductions are projections rather than issued JCM credits. Publicly available information does not yet clarify the approved methodology, crediting period, allocation between Indonesia and Japan, authorization status or whether corresponding adjustments will apply to any internationally transferred mitigation outcomes.
