Buyers Are Moving Faster On Biochar This Year, With 81% Of High-Quality Supply Already Locked In

A Supercritical market report found 81% of high-quality biochar supply was committed by July 2026, three months earlier than in 2025, leaving fewer volumes for the H2 spot market. Excluding Microsoft, offtake volumes rose tenfold from 176,000 tonnes in H1 2025 to 1.81 million tonnes in H1 2026, as larger buyers shift from ad hoc spot purchases to structured multi-year procurement. Spot prices tend to rise in H2: credits from one project sold at $155 per tonne in July 2025 reached $185 by November. Biochar remains the only pathway with a liquid spot market.
