Verra Authorizes Artio Insurance Policy For VCS Durability Pilot
Verra has approved Artio’s insurance policy for use in its VCS durability pilot, expanding the risk-management options available to carbon project developers. The product meets the pilot’s technical requirements and may be used by Verified Carbon Standard projects choosing an insurance-backed approach to manage reversal risk. Project proponents must first submit an expression of interest and obtain Verra’s authorization before negotiating a commercial agreement with Artio. Launched in December 2025, the durability pilot tests alternatives for managing permanence and reversal risks across Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use and Geological Carbon Storage projects. Under standard VCS procedures, developers contribute part of issued credits to a shared buffer pool covering reversals. The pilot instead permits approved financial instruments, including fund-based mechanisms and third-party insurance policies, as alternatives to conventional buffer deductions. Verra says insurance can provide developers with greater flexibility in managing long-term liabilities while maintaining rigorous safeguards for carbon permanence.
