World Bank approves US$200m for Thailand solar, efficiency and carbon markets
The World Bank Group approved the US$200 million Low Carbon Cities and Carbon Market Development Project to help Thailand scale public-sector investments in renewable energy, energy efficiency and carbon-market infrastructure. Private energy service companies will finance and implement upgrades, while participating agencies repay costs through energy savings. EXIM Bank will finance qualified service companies, initially supporting cooperation with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration and the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand. Krungthai Bank will aggregate carbon credits from smaller projects and connect them to carbon markets. The project will install rooftop solar and improve energy efficiency in public buildings, industrial estates, schools, healthcare facilities, district offices and streetlighting. Its targets include up to 180 MW of renewable-energy capacity, annual electricity savings of approximately 448 GWh and at least 1,800 job-years.
