The System That Removes Carbon and Makes Cleaner Fuel at the Same Time

Tencent’s CarbonX Program is supporting Parallel Carbon as it advances an integrated system that combines direct air capture with clean hydrogen production. Its membrane-free electrolyser produces hydrogen while generating the acids and bases required to release concentrated CO₂ from mineral sorbents and regenerate the capture material. This integration could create two revenue streams and reduce carbon removal’s dependence on credit sales alone. The hydrogen may support fertilizer, lower-carbon shipping fuels and sustainable aviation fuel, while captured atmospheric CO₂ must be permanently stored to qualify as carbon removal. Parallel Carbon plans to begin commissioning and testing Project Tsavorite in Kenya in 2027, using local renewable electricity and potentially storing CO₂ through mineralisation in basalt formations. Tencent has provided grant funding and helped establish local partnerships. However, the project remains at the demonstration stage, and its commercial-scale costs, net removal efficiency, operating performance, lifecycle emissions and monitoring arrangements have yet to be demonstrated under field conditions.
